Water quality impacts of recreational activities |
| Funded by: |
The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority |
| Partnerships: |
GBRMPA: Dr Madeline Fernbach |
| Objectives: |
This study explores the water quality impacts that arise from different recreational activities (and associated behaviours) conducted in the marine and near-shore environments of the GBRMP. |
| Methodology: |
The project combines observations, face-to-face interviews and a mail-reply survey of people conducting marine activities in the GBRMP. |

Future developments in northern Australia |
| Funded by: |
Australian Government Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts |
| Partnerships: |
DEWHA: Dr Ilse Kiessling
Earth to Ocean: Dr Leanne Fernandes |
| Objectives: |
The Australian Government is undertaking bioregional marine planning in the North Marine Region, which comprises commonwealth waters from west of the Torres Strait to the NT/WA border. This study provides relevant information for the planning process by investigating likely social and economic development in north Australia, which may impact on the North Marine Region. |
| Methodology: |
The project identifies and reviews drivers of global and regional change and development processes, which have the potential of impacting on the North Marine Region over the next 20 years. Particular emphasis is placed on anticipating cumulative impacts. |

Recreational offshore fishing in north Australian waters |
| Funded by: |
Australian Government Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts |
| Partnerships: |
DEWHA: Dr Ilse Kiessling |
| Objectives: |
The Australian Government is undertaking bioregional marine planning in the North Marine Region, which comprises commonwealth waters from west of the Torres Strait to the NT/WA border. This study develops relevant information into the planning process by establishing the current level of recreational fishing interests and activity in these waters. |
| Methodology: |
The project combines desktop analysis of existing studies and data with stakeholder and expert consultations across the region and a snapshot survey of recreational anglers in key locations, including Darwin, Nhulunbuy and Weipa. |
| Title: |
Economic impact assessment of Tilapia in north Queensland |
| Funded by: |
Australian Centre for Tropical Freshwater Research/Terrain |
| Partnerships: |
ACTFR: Dr Damien Burrows |
| Objectives: |
Scope and estimated the economic impacts that Tilapia have on use and non-use values of waterways in North Queensland, giving particular consideration to the direct costs involved in monitoring, management and prevention of spread. Assess the risk of potential ecological impact translating into economic impact with particular reference to impact on recreational and commercial fishing, drinking water supplies, and other uses of waterways. |
| Methodology: |
The project combines a desktop analysis with expert consultations, through focus group discussions and individual interviews. A total economic value framework is developed to differentiate different types of impacts. A risk assessment framework is developed to assess the risk of potential manifesting. |

Landholders' duty of care: Perspective of graziers in the Gulf of Carpentaria |
| Funded by: |
Northern Gulf Resource Management Group |
| Partnerships: |
James Cook University: Prof. Chris Cocklin
CSIRO: Prof. Iain Gordon |
| Objectives: |
Develop a consolidated view of graziers across the Northern Gulf region of Queensland as to what 'duty of care' constitutes and how compliance is manifest in a regional and land-use specific context. Duty of care represents the statutory requirement that a person act toward others and the public with watchfulness, attention, caution and prudence that a reasonable person in the circumstances would. If a person's actions do not meet this standard of care, then the acts are considered negligent, and any damages resulting may be claimed in a lawsuit for negligence. |
| Methodology: |
The project provides a desktop analysis of current understanding of duty of care, both academic-theoretical as well as in an Australian/Queensland policy and legal context. Workshops and a survey are convened with graziers across the Northern Gulf region to provide an operational definition of duty of care. |
